From an environmental standpoint, Coyuchi looks at the full life of a product—from the farm where the fiber is produced to what happens to the product when it reaches the end of its life. By partnering with fabric mills and workshops that share this reverence for environmental and social sustainability,  Coyuchi’s high quality standards can be maintained and impact on the planet, minimized. Through continued effort and ingenuity, they work to ensure environmental performance at production facilities.

“We believe that knowing where your linens come from and how they are made brings peace of mind.”

Coyuchi uses only natural fibers, sourcing the materials carefully and processing them minimally—so organic cotton truly feels like cotton, linen feels like linen, and wool feels like wool.  To guarantee that products align with these goals to be as ethical, sustainable and environmentally conscious as possible, they rely on guidelines and certifications from organizations around the world, including Global Organic Textile Standards (GOTS) certification and a growing collection of Fair Trade Certified goods.

$500,000 towards Louisiana Flood Relief Efforts from Walmart and The Walmart Foundation

Walmart donates to disaster relief

Walmart Trucks Deliver Bottled Water to Louisiana

Once again, in a time of crisis Walmart and the Walmart Foundation are stepping up.  The company is making a commitment to provide support through cash and in-kind donations of $500,000 to organizations helping with relief efforts for those affected by the floods in Louisiana. Working closely with the Salvation Army, American Red Cross and the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank, coordination efforts are being made with elected officials and governmental entities across the region to meet the needs of those affected by the overwhelming flooding in the Louisiana region this week. The company expects to deliver over one million bottles of water to affected areas.

Walmart has a long history of providing aid in times of disaster in Louisiana, working hand in hand with the people of the Gulf Region during and after Hurricane Katrina. Walmart continues to help communities prepare and recover by donating emergency supplies, such as food and water, home and personal products, and by creating ways for associates and community members to locate and help one another. In the last 10 years, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation have donated more than $56 million in cash and in-kind donations in response to disaster events.

“We are deeply saddened by the devastating floods in Louisiana and the catastrophic effect it’s having on our associates and members of the community,” said, Mark Cooper, Senior Director of Emergency Management, Walmart. “We are fully committed to the relief efforts and will continue to work closely with local officials to do everything we can.”

Walgreens and Unilever Team Up for Clean Water

metowe benefits from Walgreens purchase.

For the second year, Walgreens and Unilever are joining forces with social enterprise ME to WE to help provide clean water to developing communities in Africa.

From July 31 through Aug. 27, 2016, customer purchase of select products mean a donation to the program Give H2OPE to Others (#GiveH2OPE). This donation will help provide five gallons of clean water to a family in a developing community. In addition, customers purchasing two or more select Unilever products at Walgreens will help provide 15 gallons of clean water*

Through the purchase of select Unilever TRESemmé®, Suave®, Caress® or AXE® products , Walgreens and Unilever, with the help of ME to WE – a social enterprise that creates socially conscious products and experiences that allow people to do good through their everyday choices – hope to provide the Kenyan village of Esinoni with access to clean water through the construction of a borehole, a 200-meter deep well.

“Walgreens today continues a long-standing commitment of meaningful global corporate citizenship focused on making an impact in the community, environment, workplace and marketplace,” said Alex Gourlay, co-chief operating officer for Walgreens Boots Alliance, Inc. “Our participation in Give H2OPE to Others for a second year reflects this mission of making it easy for our customers to take part and help make a difference around the world.”

Give H2OPE to Others was designed to show that even the smallest steps can have a large-scale social impact – including everyday purchases. The clean water supplied from these purchases will help reduce the incidence of waterborne disease and illness to families and communities in rural Kenya. It will also help to eliminate the 30 kilometers (or approximately 6 hours) per day women and children in the region typically travel to collect water – allowing children to spend more time in the classroom and giving women the opportunity to care for their children or work.

Last year, Walgreens and Unilever helped donate more than 17.5 million gallons of clean water to the rural Kenyan village of Kipsongol. The donation was made through the construction of a borehole that helped give approximately 2,000 community members, including more than 800 children, access to 31,000 gallons of clean water every day. Providing access to this basic resource has had a ripple effect on the community, helping propel the village’s social and economic progress for a lifetime.

Pelican Water Systems To Donate 25 Water Filtration Systems to Children’s Center in Flint, Michigan

Florida-based Pelican Water Systems responds to the water crisis in Flint, Michigan, with the donation of 25 drinking water systems, complete with replacement filters, to the Whaley Children’s Center.

Flint, Michigan, has been in the news following the detection of dangerously high levels of lead in city drinking water. First reported in January of 2015, ongoing testing has detected levels as high as 397 parts per billion in some homes. While the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) notes that there is no level at which lead in the water is safe, they generally only get involved when lead levels reach 15 parts per billion or greater. Pelican Water Systems CEO, Iain Whyte, said in a recent on-air Cumulus Flint radio interview, “We’ve continued to monitor the situation to try and work with people locally and see if we can educate them as to the best ways to remove lead and other impurities in the water.”

City officials urged residents to stop consuming city water in October of 2015 after high levels of lead were found in children’s blood samples. Residents were also advised not to use unfiltered water for cooking or bathing, ultimately prompting state officials to issue a “state of emergency” in December of 2015. President Barack Obama would one month later declare a state of emergency.

The consumption of lead through water can have serious and long-term health implications including damage to the nervous system, stunted growth in children, and the development of some learning and behavior disabilities.

In that same interview, Whyte said, “The NSF-certified countertop drinking systems are small, compact and tested to eliminate 99.4% of lead.” Obviously, the filters do need to be checked regularly, but the systems have been tested to be very effective in removing lead from the water supply. Offering up to a year of purified drinking water through the use of additional filters, Pelican Water Systems provides some of best longevity for water filters on the market today.

The increased lifespan of Pelican Water Systems’ filters ensure that residents of Flint, Michigan, who have been impacted by the water crisis have access to safe, purified water over the span of several months.
