FedEx Teams Up to Deliver Supplies and Aid to Haiti

FedEx Corp. (NYSE: FDX) has delivered more than 30 tons of emergency supplies in an effort to provide assistance to the people and communities affected by Hurricane Matthew.

FedEx supports these disaster relief efforts through its humanitarian organization relationships with Direct Relief, International Medical Corps and Heart to Heart International.

“The devastating reality is people in Haiti are relying on the delivery of humanitarian aid for life’s most basic necessities,” said Jenny Robertson, director of Global Citizenship and Reputation Management at FedEx. “The FedEx network and our people who power it are equipped to deliver these critical supplies where they’re needed most.”

FedEx has worked with Direct Relief for more than a decade to deliver medical resources during times of disaster. The organization’s aid filled a charter flight that took off from the Memphis World Hub and arrived in Port-au-Prince Wednesday, October 12. Supplies included medication, medical equipment, hygiene kits and tents that can be used as pop-up health facilities.

“Hurricane Matthew dealt a doubly cruel blow to Haiti, causing tragic loss of life and vastly increased risks and harm while at the same time damaging the health facilities and infrastructure critical to responding,” said Thomas Tighe, president and CEO, Direct Relief. “That’s why an aggressive, targeted response is so important and why FedEx’s leadership to take care of the transportation barrier is such a critically important step.”

A second charter flight landed in Haiti October 13, filled with 35,000 pounds of relief supplies from International Medical Corps and Heart to Heart International. Together with these two organizations, FedEx delivered 11,000 hygiene kits, medicines and medical supplies.

With many health facilities damaged, inaccessible, or non-functional as a result of Hurricane Matthew, the urgently needed aid will reach the most affected areas of Haiti, including Grand’Anse and Sud.

“FedEx’s swift action in the wake of Hurricane Matthew makes it possible for our teams to save lives and alleviate suffering in some of the hardest hit communities in Haiti,” said Nancy Aossey, president and CEO of International Medical Corps. “FedEx knows that speed saves lives, and that every hour counts. They are making it possible for our teams to deliver urgently needed supplies and bring lifesaving medical care to those in need, helping stop the spread of cholera—a disease that has the potential to be far deadlier than the storm itself.”

The relief effort is part of the company’s FedEx Cares initiative, through which FedEx will invest $200 million in more than 200 global communities by 2020 to create opportunities and deliver positive change around the world. BJ’s and Boston Children’s Hospital reach half-way point to Blood Donor Challenge

BJ’s Wholesale Club is helping Boston Children’s Hospital’s (BCH) increase its registered donor base of blood donors by 5,000 through the end of this year.  Since March, more than 2,500 Massachusetts residents have registered as a blood donor through Boston Children’s Hospital – Bloodmobile drives, including stops at BJ’s Wholesale Club locations.

“Registering as a blood donor is an easy way to make a difference in the lives of children and families,” said Bob Eddy, chief financial officer of BJ’s Wholesale Club. “We thank every new registered donor and look forward to reaching our goal by the end of 2016.”

Across the United States more than 41,000 blood donations are used every day – that’s 1.23 million donations per month.  Locally, patients at BCH are in need of 24,000 blood transfusions each year, but that is more than three times the number of blood donations the Boston Children’s Hospital – Bloodmobile receives over the same period.
To help, local BJ’s locations will continue to host the Boston Children’s Hospital – Bloodmobile throughout the year.

In April 2014, BJ’s Charitable Foundation continued its ongoing support of BCH by donating $250,000 to support the Bloodmobile, which includes the following features:

She volunteer`s for alanon and ala teen. She attends and heads meetings two or three times a week. She also helps coordinate ala teen retreats. The kids love her and really appreciate all she has to offer. If this isn`t enough, she makes sure we have dinner and dishes and kitchen are cleaned up. Perry and his co-chefs at My Kitchen Program, Hautemealz and SimplySmartDinnerPlans are on their feet for hours smoking meats, cooking/serving meals to the homeless and teaching foster kids cooking skills through several charitable organizations in the Portland, Oregon area. They deserve happy feet!

Bill is 66 years old. He is a Vietnam veteran that served in the special forces, army. He suffers from agent Orange poisoning, which led to severe diabetes. It disabled him. He has many rough days but doesn’t give up. He has lots of ailments, and one of them is neuropathy in his feet. He likes to work in the garage but standing on the hard floor is very painful. He is a volunteer color guard with the American Legion, and standing at gravesites is hard on him. He also is an American patriot guard rider. I would love to see him have his own gel mat for the garage. I have one in the kitchen and he really feels comfort from it.

My daughter, Rachel, is Mom to Sammy, 4, and Carson, 2. Sammy has Neurofibromatosis type 1, learning disabilities, and severe ADHD. Her days are not easy… She has metal rods in her spine and hip pain on a daily basis. She enjoys baking beautiful cakes for family and friends as it’s therapeutic for her. Through all the tears, MRI’s, and doctor visits she carries on for her boys and I couldn’t be more proud of the loving Mother she is. She is truly deserving of this wonderful comfort mat. Thank you

Eman is a 28 year old mother of 2, cancer survivor who works full time rehabilitating person with strokes and brain injuries. She is a loving wife who devotes herself to taking care of her husband, kids ,mother and 4 younger brothers and sisters. Her father died tragically 3 years ago and she has filled his role since then. Everyone in her life looks up to her for strength and wisdom. She never hesitates to help anyone in need family or not. If that is not enough she is involved with a local women’s shelter and encourages her children to give back to their communities financially and by devoting time. I cant imagine a more suitable person to give this small token of appreciation to. Please consider her for this gift so tj6at she could be a little less pain free by the end of the day.

For 30 years of her 53 year marriage, Marion has been caregiver for her husband who is severely crippled. He has had many surgeries and many times had to be taken to the emergency room in the middle of the night. In addition she prepares wonderful meals and is recruited by her church to donate when they have dinners. Since her husband is disabled, they rely on Medicare and his small pension. By saving coupons, she is able to stay within their budget. She takes advantage of buy get one free which she donates to the food bank. She always remembers everybody’s birthday and anniversary. Her Christmas gifts consist of homemade raviolis and sauce. I’m extremely proud of Marion. I submitted a nomination yesterday for a very deserving person, but Marion is more deserving.

My neighbor, Wendy is a mother of a special needs daughter. She has been a tireless volunteer all her life, but now with her daughter about to graduate from high school, she needed to find a new avenue for her daughter to spend her days. Katie’s cart blossomed! Katie’s cart is rolling cart that Katie pushes through office buildings selling small nutritious goodies to employees. Wendy makes most all the goodies that Katie sells; she stands many hours and many days in her kitchen making cookies, breads, granola mixes and other baked items. Wendy also suffers from deliberating joint pain that leaves her body aching all the time. The GelPro mat would also be used by others as Katie’s cart grows. Wendy plans to hire young special needs adults to help cook goodies in her kitchen. The GelPro mat would be a huge blessing for my sweet humble neighbor.. Thank you for listening to her story.

Project L.I.F.T. Helps Cancer Survivors With Weight Gain

For those living and surviving breast cancer, weight gain can be an unexpected consequence following treatment. Weight Watchers International, Inc. (NYSE: WTW) launched Project L.I.F.T. – Live Inspired, Fight Together – a new movement, in collaboration with the American Cancer Society. The program is designed to help those survivors with advice and support.

One study reviewed by the Weight Watchers team showed that breast cancer survivors are twice as likely to gain 11 pounds or more within 5 years of treatment as compared to their cancer-free peers.

    • American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer® Events: Every three-to five-mile Making Strides walk, occurring during the month of October, is a powerful and inspiring opportunity to unite as a community to honor breast cancer survivors, raise awareness about steps to reduce the risk of developing breast cancer or find it early, and raise money to help the American Cancer Society save lives from breast cancer. The Sears 9th Annual Heroes at Home campaign with Rebuilding Together is raising funds and assisting military families facing hardship by making necessary repairs, improvements or modifications to their homes. The program, which has raised more than $18 million over the past eight years thanks to donations from Shop Your Way members, customers and associates, has funded more than 1,500 home rebuilds.

Sears is committed to helping improve the lives of military families. Heroes at Home is just one of the initiatives that supports those who sacrifice in order to keep our country safe.
