Walmart Pushes Significant Reduction in Chemicals of High Concern

walmart-logo

Walmart has been making significant progress towards sustainable chemicals in consumables since 2013. This past January, Walmart pledged to begin publicly communicating progress on moving towards sustainable chemicals. This policy seeks to remove substances of high concern from personal care, paper, cleaning, pet, and baby products.

Their most recent public communication on progress has pledged to provide a 95% (by weight) reduction on high priority chemicals sold in the US, as reported in a recent article by Chemical Watch.

Walmart has not publicly released the “10 or so” chemicals Kevin Gardener (senior director of Walmart’s global responsibility) states will be addressed in this reduction. It is worth noting that the Environmental Defense Fund (NGO dedicated to environmental issues) has been working with Walmart on meeting their sustainability goals.

Criteria For Chemicals of High Concern (as stated by Walmart officials in a recent Chemical Watch article):

  1. Listing status on one or more authoritative hazard lists as included by Greenwercs (chemical reporting took used by Walmart for supplier ingredient disclosure.)
  2. Relevance ranking by business volume, distribution, and exposure.
  3. Consideration of emerging regulations, stakeholder concern, and safer distribution feasibility.

Supplier Implications

Walmart has asked suppliers to take part in a sustainability index survey. There were some key takeaways from the data they received:

  1. ¾ of suppliers that voluntarily responded provided information on their ingredient disclosure policies.
  2. Of these suppliers that reported, 78% said they are disclosing ingredients online in accordance with a naturally recognized standard.
  3. Walmart set a goal for suppliers to disclose ingredients for all products set forth in their chemical policy (set in 2015) by 2018.

Large companies such as Walmart are now setting the precedent on a demand for higher supplier transparency within products they are selling. It is imperative that a supplier knows the origins and status of chemicals within national laws and the guidelines set forth by the companies they sell to.

Source Intelligence provides a dynamic and customizable program in which you can source and manage the chemical substances used in your products. Global product chemical regulations are continuously evolving. As a supplier, you must have the ability to construct your own product chemical compliance program, tailored to you and your clients’ unique needs. This is where Source Intelligence shines as the most comprehensive and dynamic compliance software on the market. Source Intelligence’s platform is fully customizable. Meaning that if the regulations your company needs help with aren’t already within the platform, you can customize and request the addition of regulations or laws to fit your needs.

Closing the Loop, From Frosting Buckets to Easter Baskets

Today we are happy to share this blog from Walmart Employee Steve Outain, Reverse Logistics, Walmart

walmart-logo

When your job is helping a company find ways to achieve zero waste across its global operations, you have to look beyond the obvious for opportunities. Who knew that this year, a plastic Easter basket could be one?

Walmart operates bakeries in the majority of its stores across the U.S., so we produce a lot of cakes and cupcakes. So many, in fact, that frosting is delivered to our stores in 3- to 5-gallon plastic buckets. And the last thing we want is for that constant stream of plastic to end up in a landfill, so we started looking for ways to turn something that was once thought of as trash into a valuable commodity.

This year, Olivet International stepped to the plate, helping us turn 119,000 pounds of resin – derived 100% from our empty frosting buckets – into a line of plastic Easter baskets that recently debuted in our stores. In creating them, we found a way to introduce those empty buckets back into the manufacturing stream, while also lowering the retail price of these Easter baskets to just 88 cents.

While this represents a huge win, the best news is that it didn’t just start with Easter 2016. Over the past several years, we’ve worked to change the specifications of our frosting buckets to make them as recycle-friendly as possible. As a result, we’re working with suppliers to turn this steady stream of post-consumer resin into 2.5 million plastic pet bowls annually, plastic liners for 4 million soft-sided coolers annually and more.

The opportunities aren’t just tied to our frosting buckets. We already use discarded hangers from our apparel department to manufacture the Mainstays packs of plastic hangers sold in our home department. We’ve gone from contracting with recycling companies to purchase the by-product generated in our stores, to creating solutions directly with suppliers. In doing so, we’re finding opportunities to re-engineer the ways products are made in the first place, making it easier to close the loop on the back end.

I’m proud to work for a company that’s helping create solutions for a better tomorrow. These solutions are good for people, planet – and business.

Petmate Teams Up with Miranda Lambert to Introduce the MuttNation Pet Collection

www.igive.com

Petmate®, the worldwide provider of fun, trusted, quality products to enhance the lives of pets and their families, and country music superstar Miranda Lambert are teaming up to launch the new MuttNation™ Fueled by Miranda Lambert brand at Global Pet Expo March 16-18, 2016 in Orlando, Florida. Every purchase will help fund rescue and adoption programs of MuttNation Foundation™, the organization established by Miranda and her mother Beverly Lambert in 2009.

Miranda’s love for animals has always been a big part of her life. Growing up in a home with an open door policy for people and animals alike, she has adopted that mindset for her own life.  Volunteering at the Humane Society of East Texas in her teens has led her to adopting Delilah and ultimately started “Cause for the Paws,” a yearly fundraiser now in its 8th year.

“The creation of MuttNation is a dream come true.  It’s an extension of me and my mom’s love for all dogs and our goal of helping every dog find a happy, loving home,” says Miranda.  “We are beyond thrilled to have Petmate as a committed and trustworthy partner that shares that same vision. There are millions of beautiful dogs looking for homes and it is our hope that in addition to raising money, we will raise awareness to the joy of adopting a shelter pet.”

The comprehensive collection of bedding, collars, leashes, toys, apparel, feeding and watering products reflect Miranda’s lifestyle. The product unites a country chic feel with a rock & roll flair. The vintage prints and antique hardware are inspirations of Miranda Lambert’s signature look.

One of the highlights is the Rescue Mutts collection of six plush puppies – each toy puppy was created from a real-life rescue dog with its own story. Each tale is a touching depiction of the dog’s adoption and their new family. This particular toy is very close to Miranda’s heart as her own dog Delilah was her very first rescue and is featured in the Rescue Mutt collection.

Petmate has always supported rescue and adoption efforts. “This partnership represents a major commitment to help put a stop to the epidemic of homeless pets sweeping our nation,” says Chris Wilson, the company’s executive vice president for product development.  “We are so excited to create a collection that provides ongoing support for MuttNation Foundation.  The MuttNation product line truly reflects Miranda’s lifestyle and her passion for pets.”

Toys
In addition to the Rescue Mutts, the toy collection features hand-crafted, mixed material toys with a Boho style designed for truly engaging fetch, tug and chew play.  Miranda uttfans will love the suede feel plush tambourines for chew play, guitars and animal favorites including a unicorn, flamingo, rooster and armadillo for tugging.  Perfect for fetch, toss and tug, chewing and teething, the molded rubber guitar can hold small treats stashed inside for hours of entertainment.

Bedding
The bedding collection has a down-home feel providing a relaxed yet stylish look for the home.  The superstar of the line is a tooled leather styled lounger with Petmate’s signature Dig & Burrow feature that taps into dogs’ love for nesting.  The line rounds out with loungers, pillow beds, and irresistibly soft cuddlers in pink plaids, brown cow prints, denim, and a custom bandana print.

Collars and Leashes
The collars and leashes collection features a blend of  “Country” and “Rock & Roll.” Collars are custom fit, with mixed material feels like denim and leather, tassels and bows with antique brass and nickel hardware.  The standout Bandana Neckerchief collars embrace the Americana spirit of country life.

Watering and Feeding
This collection features vintage-inspired finishes including mats with tooled leather, red bandana, rustic burlap and chalkboard photo-real prints.  The square melamine bowls bring a nostalgic tone to the line while the rustic crock bowls tap into country chic.

Walmart, Coca-Cola, Nestlé and PepsiCo Come Together to Provide Flint, Mich., Public Schools with Water for Students Through the End of the Year

www.iGive.com

Donations will provide up to 6.5 million bottles of water for approximately 10,000 Flint public school students.

Bentonville, Ark., January 26, 2016 Walmart today announced support for the Flint, Mich., community through donations, education and online services. Walmart, Coca-Cola, Nestlé and PepsiCo will collectively donate water to meet the daily needs of over 10,000 school children for the balance of the calendar year. That translates to 176 truckloads, or up to 6.5 million bottles of water, to help with relief efforts for those affected by the water crisis in Flint.

In addition to the water donation, the companies are encouraging others to support the Flint community by working with Good360, where nonprofits operating in Flint are listing their needs online.  Walmart and its suppliers will continue to work closely in the Flint community and are encouraging the public to get involved by visiting www.good360.org/flint to make donations that will go directly to local nonprofits serving the community.

“The water crisis is personal to us here in Flint. Those affected include our own associates, customers and their families,” said Beth Harris, store manager at Walmart, Flint, Mich. Our associates are proud to be a part of the effort to help our friends and neighbors.”

“At Walmart, we take pride in using our strengths to help communities like Flint during times of crisis, as we’ve done around the world in times of need,” said Dan Bartlett, executive vice president of Corporate Affairs for Walmart. “We’re working to ensure that the children of Flint, the city’s most vulnerable citizens, have access to safe water.”

Walmart has already donated 14 trucks of water, or 504,000 bottles, and 1,792 water filters to the Flint community since July 2015.  Coca-Cola has donated nearly 78,720 bottles of Dasani to local food banks and foundations and to approximately 40 associates living in the affected area. Nestlé Waters North America has already donated five truckloads, or more than 190,000 bottles, to Flint community organizations since October 2015. PepsiCo has donated almost 95,000 bottles of water to Flint and the families of the company’s employees over the past four months.

“We are grateful for Walmart and their suppliers’ support during this crisis,” said Bilal Tawwab, Flint Community Schools Superintendent. “With their generous support, District students will have access to clean drinking water, and more importantly, the ability to focus on their education.”

“PepsiCo believes that access to safe water is a basic human right,” said Tony West, executive vice president, PepsiCo Government Affairs. “We are committed to supporting the communities where we operate, and our collective action today will allow Flint school children and their parents to focus on their education rather than where they can find clean water.”

“Nestlé Waters is proud to team up with Walmart to expand our ongoing work to provide clean, safe bottled water for Flint residents,” said Cameron Lorrain, plant manager for the Michigan-based Ice Mountain® and Nestlé Pure Life® brand operations. “We will continue to work in partnership with other companies, local officials and relief organizations to ensure that families in Flint have access to a steady supply of safe drinking water.”

“We are committed to supporting Walmart and other groups in water relief efforts for the Flint community,” said Lori George Billingsley, vice president of Community Relations, Coca-Cola North America. “This critical initiative to provide bottled water to the two Flint school districts builds on our heritage of supporting disaster relief work around the world. Over the past 19 months, we have donated bottled water, volunteer hours and supported our employees in the affected area and will continue to look for ways to help meet the community’s needs.”

Walmart has a long history of providing aid in times of disaster by donating emergency supplies, such as food and water, home and personal products, and by creating ways for associates and community members to locate and help one another. Over the past 10 years, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation have provided more than $50 million in cash, in addition to in kind support, in response to events such as typhoons in Mexico and the Philippines, tsunamis in Asia, floods in the U.K. and Canada, tornadoes in the U.S., Africa’s Ebola epidemic and many other tragedies. Walmart and the Walmart Foundation also invested $7.2 million over the past 10 years to build community resiliency.
